tomcat is definitely slower to compile, though with 4.0 it's improved a lot.

the amount of code in tomcat is pretty imposing.

i use tag extension a lot, though not with inner loops. a lot of 
machinery gets invoked when you enter a tag.

haven't seen's gnujsp's version of tags..
