[jcvs] problem with fonts on jCVS

The fonts look really bad on jCVS as I have implemented it. It seems that
all the functions like  cvs diff, cvs log, cvs status  which use a default
font of some sort are barely readable.  It does things like insert a little
sqare dingbat character for a whitespace.  I'm pretty sure this is related
to the fonts.properties on our java installation but I could really use some
help.
Here are some particulars:

Solaris VM (build Solaris_JDK_1.2.2_05, native threads, sunwjit)
